Understanding CERE-120 for Parkinson’s Disease.

Parkinson’s Disease affects millions of people worldwide.  The main symptoms are caused by degeneration of brain cell that control movement.  These cell originate in the substantia nigra and communicate with the putamen and caudate.

As this cells degenerate, they lose their ability produce dopamine and to communicate properly with other cells.

Current medicines improves Parkinson’s symptoms for several years, but become ineffective as the disease progress.

An experimental bio pharmaceutical drug called (CERE-120) has been safely tested in over 60 people with Parkinson’s disease.

CERE-120 is intended to restore damaged dopamine cells and protect them from further degeneration.

CERE-120 consists of bio-engineered viral vector, containing only the gene for human nurture and naturally occurring neurotrophic factor.

This viral vector serve as a carrier for delivering nurture into the brain cells.

Neurosurgeons accurately delivers CERE-120 to the areas of the brain where neurons are degenerating.

CERE-120 Then enters the neurons inducing them to produce a continuous lifelong supply of Nurturing.

Nurturing is expected to restore the function of the nerves and protect them from further degeneration. Hence potentially reducing the severity of symptoms and slowing disease progression.

A new study is now underway to test the potential benefits and safety of CERE-120 in Parkinson’s Disease.
